Death: Life's Greatest Mystery

Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery

Chicago, 2022

I crafted a suite of soundscapes for this exhibition at The Field Museum to facilitate an environment for visitors to consider and explore the profound mystery of the afterlife. The 7,500 sq ft exhibit comprises two main galleries where music is permanently installed, playing continuously. An interactive installation features bespoke music and sound that, when triggered by a visitor, is layered over the gallery music in a generative fashion. A film installation in a dedicated theater features a music score and sound design. This exhibition is an open floor plan with transitional spaces between galleries, film and interactive installations. All of the music and sound designs are a cohesive suite- crafted to be seamless musically and texturally, so the moments of transition from one experience to another are harmonious and intentional.

The first part of the exhibition features fossils, art and cultural artifacts from deep history and around the world.

Above: detail of a dioarama of a whale carcass that, once it sinks to the bottom of the ocean, provides sustanance to others for decades.

The second half of the exhibition focuses on the cultural and societal experience of death.

Cycles Of Life
